Jack Cobb & Son Bar-B-Que
About 30 pit-cooked-barbecue restaurants remain in North Carolina. Of those, only a handful are black-owned, and one of those is Jack Cobb & Son. When he started his business in the 1940s, Cobb sold barbecue from his car. Over time, his restaurant has become one of the most revered barbecue institutions in the state. Unlike some eastern North Carolina barbecue restaurants, Jack Cobb & Son serves chopped barbecue free of skin and fat. But like the others, it cooks the whole hog and douses it with a vinegar-based sauce. This restaurant is on The North Carolina Barbecue Society Historic Trail.
